Hier j’ai commencé à peindre des enfants aux Intermèdes Robinson dans le cadre du soutien scolaire, qui continue là-bas pendant le confinement. J’ai bricolé un atelier dans “la salle des médecins”, et bien masquée et la fenêtre ouverte j’ai débuté une peinture d'un enfant, puis une autre. Les enfants ne peuvent pas poser longtemps et je m’efforce de ne pas m’imaginer que je vais faire des tableaux personnels importants avec eux. J'essaye juste d’être présente avec eux, de leur montrer que je les vois, et qu’en m'offrant le temps de leurs poses, nous travaillons ensemble à quelques chose. Mon chevalet est parmi des sacs poubelles pleins de vieux vêtements et des cartons de savons et de couches pour bébés. Mes modèles s’assoient en face de moi sur le divan d’examen. Celle-ci est une peinture de “Babe” qui date de l’été dernier..Voila la traduction en français de mon projet avec ces enfants Parisiens :.I see you.Bien souvent, nous ne savons pas si nous sommes entendus, ou même vus, les uns par les autres. My daughter Meena will be nine years old one week from today. This painting is from a November day two years ago when she was just seven. It will be part of a book for children about painting, drawing and sculpting from life that I am working on now. Here is a brief description of that project:.I see you .So often we are uncertain if we are heard, if we are seen by one another. We are all becoming a bit like canned goods gathering dust on the shelf, still edible in a pinch but our labels now seem to belong to a bygone era. We wait to hear about the US election, and what will be the new restrictions in France and everywhere, ever more constraining. How long will this all last and what will come after this? Will I be able to show my three years of paintings, nine months late, this December? Most unlikely. .I am happy though, almost more so than ever before. This prison of time is squeezing me ever tighter toward a progress of soul. Mon modèle pose.Je le regarde et, en même temps, j'essaie de voir ce qui l’entoure. Nous bavardons, nous restons silencieux, nous écoutons de la musique. Je travaille bien ou n'y parviens pas. Le modèle le sent. Quand j'ai du mal, parfois le modèle me demande “Comment savez-vous que la peinture est terminée ?" C'est une question piège. Ma peinture pourrait finir à tout moment, avant même de commencer, lorsque, tel un ange, je vois clairement. Mais je ne pourrai jamais la terminer si je cherche seulement à en faire quelque chose de bien, si je pense uniquement à devenir quelqu’un.Le jour suivant, le modèle est de retour à sa place. Chacun de nous est lavé de ses attentes, emportées par mon impossibilité à voir clairement la veille. Nous recommençons. Dans l'immobilité, un angle droit de lumière apparaît, le nez et l'épaule forment un L parfait. Le lit triangule. Je vois du bleu là où il n’y a pas de bleu. Le modèle est insouciant et tout est là ! Une seconde chance. My model models. I look at them and try to see everything around them at the same time. We chat, fall silent, listen to music. I work well or I fail to. The model can feel this. When I am struggling, the model asks me “how do you know when the painting is finished?” A trick question. My painting could finish at any moment, even before it is begun, when, like an angel, I am seeing clearly. It will never ever be done when I am full of thoughts and desires for it to be good, to make something of me. The next day the model is back in position, both of us washed clean of our expectations by my failure to see clearly the previous day. We start again. In the stillness a right angle of light appears, nose and shoulder together form a perfect L. The bed triangulates. I see blue where there isn’t any blue. The model is careless and everything is here! A second chance. I made a little sculpture of this serious 10 year old named Ali yesterday while giving a clay workshop to a bunch of kids with Intermèdes Robinson. Ali is an Afghan refugee, here in France alone with his father. It took them ten months walking, then the camp that just burned in Greece, to finally arrive in France. Now he speaks French well but still needs to learn to read.
